What is HANDMADE MATTERS®?
We are an ethical company whose vision is to keep alive the tradition of family owned leather workshops. We do this by empowering and supporting unemployed artisans to first become ethical workshop owners, then develop into self-sustaining small business owners. We already empower artisans in two continents.
Each pair of our shoes is beautifully handcrafted by artisans with premium leather. Our designs are inspired by the local traditions of Spanish culture, where our founders were born and raised.
What is our business model?
Our business model is deeply rooted in helping communities socially thrive on their own merits, work pride and sense of accomplishment. We believe that business and social work should go hand in hand. Despite the fact that we collaborate with artisans from disadvantaged areas, we also help them to grow their own workshops, so that they become independent and sustainable business owners themselves. In this way, we give the artisans not only the fish to survive the day, but also the fishing rod to provide for the future.

How did we start?
The first pair of shoes were made back in 2011, in Colombia. As in the early 2000s mass production factories were moved to Asia, lots of artisans lost their job. Observing this problem, we decided to ask a few artisans to create some handmade leather shoes for us. The quality, the details and style of the shoes were outstanding, only an experienced artisan could reach such level of perfection. We started collaborating with more and more artisans and the first collection of shoes were born. Within 6 years of great success in Colombia, we decided to bring the same social model to Spain. That’s were HANDMADE MATTERS® started.
